Equipping Your Immune System with a Powerful Punch

There has been so much talk about how to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We all know the safest ways to do our part – wear a mask, social distance, proper hand washing, cover coughs and sneezes. But there’s a factor that is soooo important to our health and safety  that has not been mentioned – boosting our immune systems so that we are better equipped to fight off viruses.

Unfortunately, this is a difficult virus for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions and the longer this goes on, the longer lives will be lost. But there are so many things we can be doing to look out for ourselves. Wearing a mask, social distancing, washing our hands and covering coughs and sneezes works both ways; some of these measures not only protect you from getting sick, but they also prevent you from spreading the disease to others. Likewise, taking care of ourselves can help our bodies quickly fight off the germs that, inevitably, will come our way.

So whether it’s COVID 19, the flu, gastroenteritis or the common cold, consider a few of the following daily practices you can commit to that can keep you, and those around you, healthy.

Make sleep a priority – a lack of sleep may decrease production of proteins that help fight off infections.

Get moving – Exercise helps promote good circulation, allowing the immune system to better do its job.

Eat smart – Consuming a diet that is rich in raw fruits and veggies helps balance the immune system. The richer the colors, the better the nutrients and antioxidants, needed for protection and recovery.

Give up unhealthy habits, like smoking – Smoking not only causes permanent damage to the lungs, but it can also wreak havoc on the balance of the immune system.

Manage stress – Anxiety levels are certainly soaring as we continue to face a worldwide pandemic. Stress releases a flood of chemicals and hormones, such as adrenaline, that can weaken the immune system and severely decrease its effectiveness.

Fight inflammation – Consuming healthy fats, like those found in olive oil, avocado and nuts, can help decrease inflammation, leading to a more efficient immune system.

Hydrate – Help your body remove toxins by drinking plenty of water every day.
